Abstract

The present work was undertaken to study the biomethanation potential of liquid composite waste from a corn glucose factory. One litre capacity biogas digesters were used for testing of biomethanation potential of the waste. It was found from the results that satisfactory amount of biogas is produced at optimum retention time of 25 days, at pH 7.5 and at 38°C ambient temperature. Scale-up studies on biomethanation of the waste in 5 L, 25 L and 125 L biogas digesters showed that the percent methane content of the biogas gradually increases. The biomethanation of liquid composite waste of glucose factory was found to be effective and capable to reduce organic load of the waste effectively than aerobic treatment process currently existing at the factory site.

Abstract

Seventy two water samples were collected from six sampling sites over a period of 12 months from Krishna river in Satara district. Physico-chemical and microbial analysis of the water samples were carried out. The influence of physico-chemical characteristics on the microbial flora with special reference to actinomycetes was evaluated.

Abstract

The potential for Micromonospora spp. (Non Streptomyces Actinomycete) isolated from Vasant Sagar Dam, located in Sangli district of Maharashtra, was studied to decolorize dye wastewater from textile industry (Rem-Red and Rem-blue). Micromonospora spp. successfully decoulorised the textile wastewater containing two dyes, Rem-red and Rem-blue. Decolourisation studies were carried by inoculating intact cells and cellular extracts of Micromonospora spp. The maximum decolourisation was observed at pH 7.0 at five days incubation period at room temperature.

Abstract

One hundred and ninety five actinomycetes were isolated from partial saline soils and 124 actinomycetes from deep saline soils of Sangli district in Maharashtra. All the actinomycetes were tested for antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma viridae and Verticillium lecanii by agar overlay method. It was found that out of 195 and out of 124 actinomycetes, isolated from partial saline and deep saline soils of Sangli, showed 12.30%, 23.07%, 35.38% and 38.46%, and 4.83%, 33.87%, 38.70% and 50.80% antagonistic activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Trichoderma viridae and Verticillium lecanii respectively.
